Otitis Media with Effusion

In this rigt ear, there is a serous middle ear effusion behind an intact but ''false membrane'' . It is made clear by blowing the nose when the mouth is closed (Valsalva's maneuver). This middle ear effusions are the result of Eustachian tube dysfunction, and are generally seen in children with adenoid hypertrophy. Adenoidectomu and pressure equalizing tube (ventilation tube, grommet) insertion is necessary if the fluid does not resolve with medical treatment, substantial hearing loss develops or degenerative changes of the tympanic membrane like retraction or atrophy appears.
