Cochlear implant is a surgically placed neuroelectronic prosthesis that converts sound to an electrical signal which is transmitted via electrodes to the spiral ganglion cells in the cochlea. Many candidates for cochlear implants often do not have access to this procedure due to failure of diagnosis or because of inadequate healthcare resources.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, aka BPPV, is the most common peripheral vestibular disease. The most important feature of the disease is ''Vertigo'' induced by head movements accompanied by nausea. It has been estimated that at least 20% of patients who present to the physician with vertigo have BPPV.
BPPV was first described by Barany in 1921. In 1952, Dix and Hallpike performed the positional testing named in their honor. After that, an evolution has occurred in the understanding of its pathophysiology and treatment. What was previously grouped as BPPV is now subclassified by the offending semicircular canal and further divided into canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis depending on the underlying mechanism. Dr. John Epley decribed the repositioning maneuvre for posterior canal BPPV in 1992, and after that, new maneuvers for curing other types of the disease are developed.
